Rings of Power

Enchanted rings have long been a staple in the D&D universe, providing characters with unique abilities and powers that can significantly impact their journeys. These rings can grant their wearers incredible advantages in combat, unlock hidden knowledge, or even sway the tide of entire kingdoms. Their allure is undeniable, and their significance in the game cannot be overstated.

Our inspiration for this exploration comes from the works of the master himself, J.R.R. Tolkien, who immortalized the power and mystique of magical rings in his legendary tales. Although we shall not tread directly in the footsteps of Middle-earth, we shall strive to honour the spirit of his creations as we unveil our own original enchanted rings, each with its own distinct tale and extraordinary abilities.

The role of enchanted rings in Tolkien's mythology is both fascinating and immensely influential. They have captured the imaginations of readers and players alike, inspiring countless tales of adventure and intrigue. What makes these rings stand out from other magical items is their unassuming yet potent nature, as well as the rich symbolism they carry within the greater narrative.

In Tolkien's legendarium, magical rings were pivotal to the overarching story, serving as both sources of power and the embodiment of the characters' desires, strengths, and weaknesses. The most famous example, of course, is the One Ring, which represents the ultimate power of domination and corruption. This singular artefact is the driving force behind the entire narrative, demonstrating how a small, seemingly innocuous item can wield immense influence over the fate of an entire world.

But the One Ring was not alone in its significance. There were the lesser-known Rings of Power, which were given to the leaders of Elves, Dwarves, and Men. Each ring had its own unique abilities and bore the essence of its creator, the Dark Lord Sauron, who intended to use them to manipulate and control the free peoples of Middle-earth. These rings not only provided great power but also served as a cautionary tale about the potential consequences of wielding such might, as the recipients often faced dire consequences.

The enchanting allure of rings in Tolkien's mythology lies in their discrete and unassuming nature. While a mighty sword or a suit of armour may draw attention, a simple ring can be easily hidden, allowing its wearer to wield its power in secret. This inherent subtlety and the fact that they can be worn by any character, regardless of size or strength, make enchanted rings uniquely versatile and accessible.

Furthermore, rings possess a rich symbolic significance in Tolkien's world, often representing the bonds of loyalty, friendship, and love. Characters like Frodo and Sam exemplify the strength of these connections, as their devotion to each other and the task at hand is central to their success. The circular form of a ring itself symbolizes eternity, and the enchantments imbued within them serve as a metaphor for the limitless potential of the human spirit.

In summary, enchanted rings in Tolkien's mythology hold a distinct and influential position among magical items. Their discrete and unassuming appearance, along with their powerful abilities and rich symbolism, make them a compelling choice for adventurers seeking to harness the power of the arcane. By incorporating elements of Tolkien's enchanted rings into your own D&D campaigns, you can create a similarly captivating and immersive experience for your players, where the smallest of items can change the course of destiny.

A. Magic rings in gameplay

In Dungeons & Dragons, enchanted rings play a crucial role in enhancing the gameplay experience, offering players unique abilities that can dramatically influence the course of their adventures. These magical items provide characters with versatile and powerful tools that often complement their existing skills or grant them entirely new capabilities.

One of the key aspects of enchanted rings in D&D is the way they can create exciting opportunities for creative problem-solving and strategic thinking . Whether it's using a ring of invisibility to sneak past a group of guards or employing a ring of telekinesis to manipulate objects from a distance, these artefacts open up a myriad of possibilities for players to explore.

Moreover, enchanted rings can serve as potent story elements, driving the narrative forward and presenting characters with intriguing challenges or moral dilemmas. Just as the One Ring in Tolkien's legendarium serves as the central plot device, a powerful enchanted ring in a D&D campaign can become the focus of an epic quest, the catalyst for conflict, or the means to achieve a long-sought goal.

B. Customization and creativity options

One of the most appealing aspects of enchanted rings in D&D is the virtually limitless potential for customization and creativity (rather like our Spellforging system...). Dungeon Masters have the freedom to craft unique rings with bespoke powers and abilities, tailoring them to fit their campaign setting and the preferences of their players. This flexibility allows DMs to introduce enchanted rings as valuable rewards, mysterious treasures, or even dangerous cursed items that come with unforeseen consequences.

In addition to creating entirely new rings, DMs can also modify existing rings from official sourcebooks, adjusting their powers or properties to better suit the needs of their campaign. This can be a particularly effective approach for introducing an element of surprise, as players may be familiar with the canonical rings and their abilities.

When designing custom enchanted rings, DMs should consider the balance of their campaign, ensuring that the rings are neither too powerful nor too weak. Striking the right balance can be challenging, but it's essential for maintaining an engaging and enjoyable gameplay experience.

Ultimately, the realm of enchanted rings in D&D offers a wealth of opportunities for creativity and customization, allowing DMs and players alike to explore exciting new powers and abilities while adding depth and intrigue to their campaigns. Inspired by the legacy of Tolkien's magical rings, these artefacts can become the cornerstone of unforgettable stories, uniting characters in a shared quest for glory and adventure.

The Ring of Eldanar

Description and origin

The Ring of Eldanar is a legendary artifact crafted by the great elven mage Eldanar, who was renowned for his unparalleled skill in enchanting and imbuing objects with arcane power. The ring is made of mithral, a rare and precious metal favored by elves for its beauty and resilience. Encircling the mithral band are finely etched elven runes that emit a faint, silvery glow, a testament to the potent magic contained within.

Eldanar created the ring as a gift for his beloved, Lariel, a fearless elven ranger renowned for her prowess in battle and her unwavering dedication to protecting her people. The ring was intended to aid Lariel in her quests and to serve as a symbol of the eternal bond between her and Eldanar. However, before the ring could be presented to Lariel, it was stolen by a cunning thief, and its whereabouts have remained a mystery ever since.

Powers and abilities

The Ring of Eldanar grants the following powers and abilities to its wearer:

+2 bonus to Dexterity: The ring enhances the wearer's agility and reflexes, making them more nimble and precise in their movements.

Advantage on Stealth checks: The elven magic imbued within the ring allows the wearer to move silently and blend into their surroundings, making it easier to avoid detection.

Eldanar's Guidance (1/day): Once per day, the wearer can call upon the wisdom of Eldanar, gaining advantage on a single attack roll, ability check, or saving throw. The wearer must decide to use this ability before making the roll.

Elven Longevity: While attuned to the ring, the wearer does not age and is immune to magical aging effects.

Ideas for integrating it into a campaign

The party learns of the Ring of Eldanar's existence and its powerful abilities from an ancient elven tome or a knowledgeable NPC. They decide to embark on a quest to recover the long-lost artefact, following clues and navigating treacherous obstacles to unravel the mystery of its location.

The party encounters a rival group of adventurers or villains who also seek the Ring of Eldanar. The two groups may race against each other, form an uneasy alliance, or even engage in direct conflict in their pursuit of the ring.

The theft of the Ring of Eldanar could be part of a larger plot, in which the thief or their employer seeks to gather several powerful artifacts for a nefarious purpose. The party's mission to recover the ring may ultimately lead them to confront an even greater threat.

If a party member becomes the wearer of the Ring of Eldanar, they may find themselves haunted by visions of Lariel or drawn into a centuries-old conflict between rival elven factions, each seeking to claim the ring as their own.

The Ring of Eldanar could serve as a symbol of hope and unity for an elven kingdom or alliance, with the party tasked with recovering it to strengthen their allies' morale and resolve in the face of a looming danger.

Ring of Thalgor

Description and origin

The Ring of Thalgor is a storied artefact, created by a close ally of Eldanar, the dwarven master blacksmith Thalgor Ironhammer. This ring, forged from adamantine and adorned with intricate dwarven runes, was a testament to the deep bond between Thalgor and Eldanar, symbolizing the unity and friendship between their respective races.

Upon learning of the theft of the Ring of Eldanar, Thalgor vowed to create a ring of equal power and magnificence to aid in the quest to recover the stolen artifact. He toiled for months, pouring his heart and soul into the creation of the Ring of Thalgor, and imbued it with powerful enchantments drawn from the heart of the earth itself.

Unfortunately, Thalgor met a tragic end before he could entrust the ring to a worthy champion, and it became lost to the annals of history. Rumors persist, however, that the ring lies hidden deep within a forgotten dwarven stronghold, guarded by ancient traps and powerful guardians.

Powers and abilities

The Ring of Thalgor grants the following powers and abilities to its wearer:

+2 bonus to Constitution: The ring fortifies the wearer's resilience, enhancing their ability to withstand physical and magical harm.

Tremorsense (30 feet): The wearer can detect and pinpoint the origin of vibrations within 30 feet, granting them a heightened awareness of their surroundings.

Stonecunning: The wearer gains the dwarven ability of Stonecunning, allowing them to make Intelligence (History) checks related to the origin of stonework with double their proficiency bonus, even if they are not proficient in the skill.

Thalgor's Resolve (1/day): Once per day, the wearer can call upon the indomitable spirit of Thalgor, gaining temporary hit points equal to their level + their Constitution modifier. These temporary hit points last for up to 1 hour.

Ideas for integrating it into a campaign

The party, already in pursuit of the Ring of Eldanar, stumbles upon clues that lead them to the existence of the Ring of Thalgor. They may decide to seek out the second ring to bolster their strength in their quest to recover the stolen artifact, or to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.

A dwarven emissary or historian approaches the party, seeking their assistance in locating the long-lost Ring of Thalgor. They believe that recovering the ring could help forge a new alliance between the dwarves and elves, or bolster the courage of their people in the face of a looming threat.

The party discovers that a sinister cult has also learned of the Ring of Thalgor and seeks to harness its power to further their dark agenda. The party must race against time to navigate the treacherous dwarven stronghold, overcome its guardians, and claim the ring before the cult can seize it.

If a party member becomes the wearer of the Ring of Thalgor, they may find themselves drawn into the intrigue of a dwarven court or tasked with mediating disputes between rival factions seeking to control the ring's power.

The Ring of Thalgor could serve as a beacon of hope for a beleaguered dwarven kingdom, with the party charged with recovering the artefact to inspire their allies and rally them against a seemingly insurmountable foe. The quest for the Ring of Thalgor may also serve to unite the party with new allies, such as a group of dwarven warriors or a venerable elven mage, who share their goal of recovering both legendary rings.

Ring of Valithria

Description and origin

The Ring of Valithria is a product of human ambition, crafted by the brilliant but flawed human mage, Valithria Stormsong. Enamored by the legends of Eldanar's ring, Valithria sought to recreate the original artefact's powers and harness its potential for the betterment of humankind. The ring itself is made of an alchemically treated platinum alloy and is adorned with swirling arcane symbols that seem to shimmer and shift when observed closely.

Despite Valithria's considerable magical talents, the process of replicating the enchantments of the Ring of Eldanar proved to be fraught with difficulties. While she succeeded in imbuing the ring with a portion of the original artefact's power, her efforts resulted in unintended consequences that would ultimately brand the Ring of Valithria as a cursed and unpredictable artifact.

Powers and abilities

The Ring of Valithria grants the following powers and abilities to its wearer:

+1 bonus to Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma: The ring enhances the wearer's mental faculties, granting them heightened insight, acumen, and force of personality.

Arcane Knowledge: The wearer gains proficiency in the Arcana skill. If they are already proficient, they add double their proficiency bonus to Arcana checks.

Valithria's Gambit: When casting a spell, the wearer may choose to roll a d20. On a roll of 10 or higher, the spell is cast at one level higher than the spell slot expended, without consuming an additional slot. On a roll of 9 or lower, the spell fails and the spell slot is wasted. This ability can be used a number of times equal to the wearer's Intelligence modifier (minimum of once) and regains all expended uses after a long rest.

The Unintended Consequence: Each time the wearer benefits from Valithria's Gambit, there is a 10% chance that they will also trigger a random wild magic surge, as per the Wild Magic Sorcerer's Wild Magic Surge table.

Ideas for integrating it into a campaign

The party uncovers an ancient tome or hears rumours of the Ring of Valithria's existence, piquing their curiosity about its powers and its connection to the legendary Ring of Eldanar. They may decide to seek out the ring, either to wield its power or to study its enchantments and the effects of the unintended consequences.

A powerful mage or magical organization tasks the party with recovering the Ring of Valithria, believing that they can harness its powers or unlock the secrets of its creation to benefit the magical community or further their own ends.

The party encounters a tormented individual who has become the unwitting wearer of the Ring of Valithria, and now struggles with its unpredictable and potentially dangerous effects. The party may choose to help them remove the curse or seek out a way to stabilize the ring's powers.

If a party member becomes the wearer of the Ring of Valithria, they may find themselves the subject of envy or fear among those who covet the ring's power or dread its unintended consequences. The wearer may also become a target of those who seek to control the knowledge and secrets of Eldanar's original creation.

The quest for the Ring of Valithria could lead the party to cross paths with other seekers of magical power, such as rival adventurers, treasure hunters, or sinister forces who desire to exploit the ring's potential for their own dark purposes. The party's journey may also intertwine with the legends of the Rings of Eldanar and Thalgor, uniting them in a shared pursuit of ancient and powerful artefacts.

D. Ring of Amaranthine

Description and origin

The Ring of Amaranthine is a celestial artifact, forged by divine beings in the higher planes around the same time as Eldanar's ring. Bestowed upon the Knights Tavanier, a noble order dedicated to upholding justice and defending the innocent, the ring was intended to serve as a symbol of their divine mandate and a source of power to aid them in their righteous pursuits.

The Ring of Amaranthine is crafted from a radiant, otherworldly metal with a lustrous golden hue that never tarnishes or dulls. Divine Smite (1/day): Once per day, the wearer can call upon the celestial power imbued within the ring to smite a foe with divine energy. When they hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, they can choose to deal an additional 2d8 radiant damage. This damage increases to 3d8 if the target is an undead or fiend.

Celestial Guidance: The wearer gains advantage on all Intelligence (Religion) checks and can communicate with celestial beings as if under the effects of the tongues spell.

Ideas for integrating it into a campaign

The party learns of the Ring of Amaranthine's existence through an ancient prophecy or divine revelation, guiding them to seek out the ring to aid them in their struggle against a great evil or to restore balance in the world.

The Knights Tavanier, now a diminished and scattered order, enlist the party's help to recover the Ring of Amaranthine and restore their former glory. The ring's recovery could lead to a resurgence of the order, with the party playing a pivotal role in their reformation and the continuation of their noble mission.

A malevolent force seeks to corrupt the Ring of Amaranthine, hoping to twist its divine power to their own dark ends. The party must race against time to secure the ring and prevent it from falling into the wrong hands, lest the consequences be catastrophic.

If a party member becomes the wearer of the Ring of Amaranthine, they may find themselves called upon to take up the mantle of a Knight Tavanier, championing the cause of justice and defending the innocent from harm. E. Ring of Corandil

Originally forged by wicked drow smiths in the depths of the Underdark, the ring was crafted with the intent of sowing chaos and destruction in the world above. However, fate had other plans for the ring, as it was stolen by a daring elven rogue named Corandil, who recognized the potential for good that could be achieved if the ring's dark power was repurposed.

Corandil brought the ring to the surface and sought the help of skilled elven enchanters to cleanse and reforge it. The drow's sinister magic was carefully removed, and the ring was imbued with new enchantments that would serve the forces of good. Corandil's Grace (1/day): Once per day, the wearer can use a bonus action to become invisible, as per the invisibility spell, for up to 1 minute. The invisibility ends early if the wearer attacks or casts a spell.

Bonus Essay: Creating Epic Magic Rings: Unleashing Power and Lore in Your D&D Adventures

Introduction

As a Dungeon Master (DM), you hold the keys to a vast and imaginative world within the realms of Dungeons & Dragons. To add a touch of epicness and interconnected lore to your adventures, incorporating magic rings with compelling backstories is a brilliant idea.

Magic rings provide a powerful tool for storytelling, enhancing the abilities of player characters, and introducing captivating twists. In this article, we'll explore different ways to create magic rings and infuse them with rich narratives that will leave your players spellbound.

  1. The Foundation: Ability Scores and Magic Rings

When designing a magic ring, consider its impact on ability scores. A ring might boost a specific attribute, such as Strength, Dexterity, or Intelligence. Alternatively, it could provide a bonus to multiple abilities, making it versatile for various classes and character builds.

  • A Balancing Act: Armor Class and Damage Types

Magic rings can enhance a character's armour class, making them more difficult to hit in combat. Additionally, they can offer protection against specific damage types, allowing the wearer to resist or mitigate physical, elemental, or even psychic damage.

  • Unleashing Magic: Spells and Magical Properties

One fascinating aspect of magic rings is their capacity to store and cast spells. A ring of spell storing, for example, can hold a number of spells that player characters can unleash in dire situations. Consider adding unique spells to your ring's repertoire, offering additional options beyond what the character's class provides.

  • Conversations in Whispers: Sentient Magic Rings

Crafting a sentient magic ring opens up intriguing possibilities. These rings have minds of their own and can communicate with the wearer or even attempt to influence the character's decisions. Balancing their power with the potential side effects can lead to compelling storylines and character development.

  • Unlocking Potential: Command Words and Activation

Magic rings often require a command word or specific action to activate their abilities. Choose a command word that resonates thematically with the ring's effect, adding an extra layer of immersion and flavor to the gameplay.

  • The Web of Lore: Interconnected Backstories

Linking the creation of magic rings to the history and lore of your world establishes a deeper connection between the items and the setting. Consider involving major cities, ancient civilizations, or powerful factions in the stories of the rings and their creators. These connections can create memorable questlines for your players.

  • Power Unleashed: Higher Levels and Scaling

Magic rings can grow in power as player characters reach higher levels. Design rings with abilities that scale with the wearer's progress, ensuring they remain relevant and exciting throughout the campaign.

  • Worldly Influence: Planar Connections and Unique Effects

Drawing inspiration from the elemental planes or other realms can yield fascinating magic rings. For example, a ring infused with the essence of the Elemental Plane of Air might grant the ability to cast the Blink spell or provide resistance to lightning damage.

  • Wondrous Variety: Magic Rings for Different Classes

Consider creating magic rings tailored to different classes and playstyles. A finesse weapon-focused ring could boost attack rolls and damage for rogues, while a spellcasting ring might grant additional spells or increase the effectiveness of existing ones for wizards or sorcerers.

Ring of the Shadow Adept

Context and Lore: Within the ancient kingdom of Valeria, a clandestine sect known as the Shadows of Ebonholt holds sway. These mysterious individuals are masters of stealth and manipulation, dedicated to maintaining the balance between light and darkness. They draw their powers from the Plane of Shadows, an ethereal realm teeming with enigmatic energies. The Shadows of Ebonholt craft unique magical artefacts, and one such artifact is the Ring of the Shadow Adept.

Description and Abilities: The Ring of the Shadow Adept is a slender obsidian band adorned with delicate silver etchings, reminiscent of shifting shadows. Its magical properties are intricately tied to the wearer's mastery of darkness and their ability to blend seamlessly into the shadows.

Primary Ability: The ring enhances the wearer's stealth and dexterity, granting a +2 bonus to Dexterity checks and adding a +1 bonus to their Armor Class when in dim light or darkness.

Secondary Ability: Once attuned to the ring, the wearer gains the ability to cast the spell "Shadow Step" once per long rest. This spell allows them to teleport instantly from one patch of darkness to another within a range of 60 feet, granting them unparalleled mobility and surprise tactics.

Lore and Questline: Legends speak of an ancient artefact known as the "Orb of Twilight," an artefact of immense power that allows its possessor to control the boundaries between light and shadow. The Shadows of Ebonholt seek to retrieve this artifact to maintain the balance in the kingdom.

The Ring of the Shadow Adept serves as a crucial key to unlocking the secrets of the Orb of Twilight. It is said that the ring was forged using a fragment of the orb itself, imbued with the essence of the Plane of Shadows. The Shadows of Ebonholt entrust a group of brave adventurers to recover the ring from a hidden vault in an abandoned temple, deep within a haunted forest.

The quest intertwines with the larger narrative of a looming darkness threatening the kingdom. As the adventurers delve into the forest and confront malevolent forces, they uncover clues that the Orb of Twilight has fallen into the hands of a powerful cult of mind flayers seeking to unleash its chaotic powers. The Shadows of Ebonholt urge the adventurers to retrieve the ring, gain its power, and confront the cult before they plunge the land into eternal darkness.

Conclusion: By incorporating the Ring of the Shadow Adept into the wider context and lore of the Shadows of Ebonholt and the ancient artifact, the DM adds depth, mystery, and a sense of purpose to the magic ring. The quest to obtain the ring becomes an integral part of the adventurers' journey, connecting them to a larger conflict and driving the narrative forward with epic stakes.
