**Making a Saving Throw**:
When a character encounters a situation that calls for a saving throw, they roll a twenty-sided die (d20) and add the relevant ability modifier to the result. If the total equals or exceeds a predetermined difficulty class (DC) set by the Dungeon Master (DM), the character succeeds in the save and typically takes reduced or no damage, avoids a negative condition, or otherwise benefits from their success. If the total falls short of the DC, the character fails the save and may suffer the full effects of the hazard or spell.

**Proficiency in Saving Throws**:
Some classes, races, or character features grant proficiency in specific saving throws, allowing characters to add their proficiency bonus to those saves. Proficiency in a saving throw means the character is more adept at resisting effects associated with that save, increasing their chances of success.

**Resistance and Vulnerability**:
Characters and creatures may have resistance or vulnerability to certain types of damage or effects, which can affect their saving throws. Resistance means they have advantage on saving throws against that type of damage or effect, while vulnerability gives them disadvantage.

**Legendary Resistance**:
Some powerful creatures, particularly those of high challenge rating, possess a special feature called "Legendary Resistance." This feature allows them to automatically succeed on a failed saving throw a certain number of times per day, making them formidable adversaries.
