The Death of the Old World

The Collapse is the defining historical cataclysm that shattered the old world and paved the way for the dark future of Cyberpunk. It wasn't a single event, but a catastrophic domino effect of greed, corruption, and disaster that occurred in the 1990s. It began with a global stock market crash in 1994, engineered by a secret US government cabal called the "Gang of Four." This triggered a worldwide depression, wiping out the middle class and causing homelessness to skyrocket. This economic ruin was compounded by ecological disasters, devastating droughts, and a nuclear exchange in the Middle East that crippled the world's oil supply. As the US government buckled under the strain, it declared martial law. In the ensuing chaos, states began to secede, Nomad families formed from the legions of displaced and unemployed, and the megacorporations, with their private armies and vast resources, stepped in to fill the power vacuum. The old America was dead, and from its ashes rose the brutal, corporate-dominated society of the Time of the Red.

The Collapse was a perfect storm of systemic failures that began long before the infamous stock market Crash of '94. In the Cyberpunk timeline, the 1980s were marked by rising social decay and a "me-first" mentality that eroded societal norms. A secret cabal of US intelligence agencies—the CIA, FBI, NSA, and DEA, known collectively as the Gang of Four—began operating as a shadow government, manipulating global events to enrich themselves and their corporate benefactors. They instigated the First Central American War, a disastrous conflict fought to destabilize the region and control the drug trade, which ended in failure and even a small tactical nuke being detonated in New York City.

Their ambition culminated in a scheme to manipulate and crash the world's stock markets. When this plot was exposed, it triggered the Crash of '94, a global financial meltdown that crippled the world's economies. The United States was hit hardest. The dollar became nearly worthless, unemployment surged to catastrophic levels, and an estimated one in four Americans became homeless.[3] The federal government, already hollowed out by the Gang of Four's corruption, completely fell apart. In 1996, with the nation in chaos, the President was assassinated, and his Vice President, a founding member of the Gang of Four, declared martial law.[2]

This was the final nail in the coffin of the old USA. The nation fractured. States like California, Texas, and others, fed up with federal tyranny and incompetence, seceded from the Union, becoming "Free States."[2][4] The military itself splintered, with many units refusing to fire on their own citizens and siding with the secessionists.[2] This period of intense civil strife and environmental disaster—including a nuclear war that turned the Middle East into a radioactive wasteland and destroyed half the world's oil supply—created the society of Cyberpunk.[2][3] Millions of disenfranchised and homeless citizens formed the Nomad clans, while in the decaying cities, Boostergangs took root.[3] Into this power vacuum stepped the megacorporations. With national governments powerless, corporations like Arasaka and Militech used their immense wealth and private armies to seize control, offering stability and security in exchange for absolute authority.[2]

Adventure Hook

An aging history professor, a tenured relic from a time before the Collapse, hires the crew for a sensitive job. He's been contacted by an anonymous source claiming to have a server containing the "Rosetta Stone" of the Collapse: unredacted communications between the original members of the Gang of Four. This data could definitively prove who gave the orders and which corporations were complicit in the destruction of the old world. The source wants to trade the server for safe passage out of Night City.

The meet is set in the ruins of an old federal building in the Hot Zone, a dangerous and irradiated remnant of the old world. When the crew arrives, they find the source is a former NSA analyst, paranoid and on the run. The exchange is ambushed. A corporate hit squad from Network News 54, a media corporation with deep ties to the former US government, storms the building. They aren't there to kill the analyst; they want the server. The crew discovers that N54 has spent decades curating the official, sanitized history of the Collapse. This server contains the raw, ugly truth, and they will kill anyone to keep it buried. The crew must fight their way out of the ruins, protecting both the analyst and a data cache that could change history.
