The Wild Lands of the Nomads: Bikes, Battles and Bloodfeuds.
Step outside the suffocating chrome jungle of Night City and the world opens up into the vast, desolate expanse known as the Badlands. This arid wasteland, scarred by ecological collapse and corporate exploitation, is a harsh and unforgiving territory that stands in stark contrast to the neon glow of the metropolis it surrounds. The air is thick with dust and pollution from unchecked resource extraction and burning oil fields. Here, the law is what you make it, and survival depends on the vehicle you drive and the iron you carry. The Badlands are not empty, however; they are the domain of the Nomads, close-knit families and clans who live a life of freedom and hardship on the open road. These roving groups carve out a living by scavenging, smuggling, and taking on contracts that city-dwelling edgerunners wouldn't dare touch. For the unprepared, the Badlands are a death sentence, but for those who know their secrets, they hold unique and golden opportunities.
The Badlands surrounding Night City are the direct result of decades of environmental catastrophe and unchecked corporate greed.Severe droughts and pollution have turned what was once Californian countryside into a hostile desert. The landscape is a monotonous stretch of cracked earth, punctuated by abandoned towns, sprawling junkyards, and massive corporate-owned energy and agricultural installations, like the solar farms and protein farms run by Biotechnica. The wealth and resources stripped from this land all flow directly into Night City, leaving the inhabitants of the Badlands with the scraps.
Life in this harsh environment has bred a unique and resilient culture, primarily embodied by the Nomad clans. Forged from the millions of families who lost everything during the Market Collapse of the 1990s, Nomads banded together into mobile caravans, creating societies on wheels. In the area around Night City, two major factions hold sway: the Aldecaldos and the Wraiths. The Aldecaldos, one of the oldest and largest Nomad nations, often operate as smugglers, laborers, and escorts, maintaining a strong sense of family and honor.[4] In contrast, the Wraiths, also known as the Raffen Shiv, are a more violent and nihilistic group, notorious for hijacking corporate transports and preying on unwary travelers.
For edgerunners, the Badlands represent both a significant threat and a lucrative opportunity. The region is a hotbed of smuggling, with Nomads moving contraband, weapons, and people in and out of the heavily controlled city. Fixers often hire city-based talent for jobs that require a delicate touch or deniable assets, such as raiding a corporate convoy or extracting a target from a rival clan's territory.[8] However, navigating the complex politics of the Nomad clans is crucial; offending one group can lead to a swift and violent end. Beyond the human element, the environment itself is a danger, with chemical spills, acid rain, and vast, unpopulated stretches where a vehicle breakdown can be a fatal disaster.
Adventure Hook
A Nomad family from the Aldecaldos clan, the Jaramillos, puts out a desperate call for help through a local fixer. Their prized custom vehicle, a heavily modified and armored transport called "The Jackal," has been stolen. The Jackal is more than just a ride; it holds their water purifier, medical supplies, and sentimental items from their family's history. They believe the culprits are a splinter group of Wraiths who have been growing bolder in their attacks. The crew is hired to track the Wraiths, recover the vehicle, and bring it back in one piece. The trail leads them deep into a treacherous part of the Badlands, through a series of environmental hazards and encounters with other desperate scavengers. They eventually locate the Wraiths' hideout: a fortified, abandoned highway interchange. The Wraiths, however, weren't the masterminds. They were hired by a corporate agent from Continental Armaments who wants the Jackal for its unique, jury-rigged offensive and defensive systems—a perfect prototype to reverse-engineer. The crew must now infiltrate the heavily guarded base, battling both the savage Wraiths and a well-equipped corporate tactical team to reclaim the heart of a family's legacy.
